The Deacons, under general supervision of the pastoral team, are responsible for the administrative, organizational and material aspects of our church life. The Deacons meet on alternate weeks. Every year they submit a budget for approval by the church, and work in the course of the ear in accordance with that budget.
In addition to the needs of our growing church, Grace and Truth reaches out to others in need. In cooperation with Patmos International in Finland, we aid a number of schools for special needs children. In cooperation with the Isaac da Costa Fund in the Netherlands, we provide Israeli Christian soldiers from all over the country with a traditional Purim parcel. We also work closely with two homes for the homeless, assisting as our means and energies allow. We consider it important to understand that these efforts are not an extension of our evangelistic endeavors. They are an expression of our sincere love for all men, as commanded by God and nurtured by his love to us and the motivating work of the Holy Spirit.
W hy do we need deacons?
Since we are still living in our earthly body, and this body has its own weaknesses and its needs to be met, it is recommended that a church will organize an institution to face these challenges.
So as in the first church when the apostles came to a conclusion that in the church there are not only spiritual problems, but there are earthbound problems too that needed to be dealt with, in the same way in Grace and Truth congregation we had to realize that there is a need for those who will take care of the material concerns of the church, in order to enable the elders to devote themselves " to prayer and to the ministry of the word" (Acts 6:4).
According to this biblical principle diaconal board was set up in Grace and truth Congregation, and is composed of four men (including the chairman), and two helpers.
What are the duties of deacons?
The duty of deacons can be summed up in one word: service. That is the meaning of the Greek word διακονος, translated 'deacon' into English. The assignment of the first deacons was to serve around the tables. Jesus Christ Himself came to serve, leaving us an example. He not only preached the Word, but he healed the sick as well (Mt 9:35).
Every believer has to serve, not only the deacons. We are all called to do good and to serve others "Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." (Gal 6:10)
With this goal in view, and following the example set before us in the Scripture, the deacons of Grace and Truth make every effort to serve the believers first and make a contribution to all men around us, according to the resources at hand and under the supervision of the elders. Our tasks entire taking care of all the material issues of the church, including donations, organization, concern for the poor, widows, single-parents, and more. We strive to involve all the members of the church in service and help to each other as an expression of love.
